Jesus was coming into the city of Jerusalem on His way to be tried and crucified. The crowd had broken out in rejoicing and praise saying “blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” These people had the idea that Jesus was going to be their king while the Pharisees were a little miffed about what they were saying. Being disgruntled they said to Jesus to rebuke them or say something to stop what they were saying. This is where Jesus speaks these interesting words. Jesus replied “I tell you, if theses were silent, the very stones would cry out.” (ESV)
This passage does not delve into the heart behind the pharisees but one can only imagine what they were thinking. I am not in any position to guess but what can be understood is that there will always be people who do not agree or speak in opposition to what the Bible says. Who are you going to listen to?
The Bible speaks into this where in 2 Timothy 4:3 we read “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.” (ESV) My hope and prayer is that you are surrounding yourself with people who are grounded in God’s word and are serious about following Him. Now I am not saying that I have this all figured out because I am still on the journey to know God more but this is an important thing for you to consider.
People will always say things and things that they do not know anything about but the wisdom and discernment from God’s word is so vital. Proverbs 17:24 say ” The discerning sets his face towards wisdom, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.” This indicates the things of the earth or things that have earthly value. Instead set your minds on things that have eternal value which God’s word speaks into throughout it’s pages.
So sing praises and be mindful of the truth of God’s word. If you are not filling your mind with these things and speaking the truth in love and living it out the stones will speak the truth. Follow and live the Bible and let the Stones of Life Speak!
