Many people were saddened by the death of Kobe Bryant. He definitely had some amazing skills and success as a basketball player. One of the things that impressed me was that he truly had an influence on those around him and his family. What he brought to the game was a focus that helped him succeed. This quote by Kobe would exemplify his success. “if your habits do not reflect your dreams or goals, change your habits.” Looking at his success do you think habits are important? Habits keep have the potential to keep you on track. Without habits our lives can drift off course.

How do you reduce the chance of drifting off course?

We are almost 2 months into the new year and many people have abandoned their goals or are making changes to them because things are getting harder or they have experienced some challenges. Things have gotten in the way as well as there were things that came up that you might not have anticipated. It’s not too late! Take the time to refocus and regain the right trajectory because it is the trajectory or the system that will carry you to your destination.

Some of the challenge in drifting off course is your mindset. When things get hard you may tend to get down on yourself or you may only see the challenges. I have been in that place in the past partly because I did not have the experience to get out of that place and partly because I was trying to do everything on my own. I believe it is important to have goals and to try to accomplish more that you feel you are capable of, but this requires work. There are three areas that you should concentrate on to reduce the drift in your life or business.

  • Habits – I can’t remember where I heard this phrase, but it is helpful when you think about your daily life. Listen to this. “You don’t choose your future you choose your habits and your habits determine your future.” Whatever goal or dream you have will take effort and work. This is where habits come in. I know a huge habit that I am overcoming is the felt need to check emails every 1/2 hour or so. You may have the habit of checking in with social media more than you should. These are all choices. In comparison to make the choice to make that next sales call or to schedule daily time to write. Figure out the big rocks in your business and then figure out what the process is and how to make those a habit.
  • Process – This is an extension of habit but will guide you to keep you on course. What are the things that you do at work or at home that may be inefficient or ineffective? Again, this takes time and work to stop and evaluate those tasks and processes that you do every day. Things that if done better or in a more efficient way, can be little things that add up to a better process making your work more efficient and will bring you greater profit.
  • Discipline – This is the follow up to process. Discipline is the work that needs to be done. I personally feel that this is the driver to the habits and process. By knowing what needs to get done and what will bring you the greatest return, do those things over and over. This will create the habit which will drive the process and bring you the most joy because it will bring the greatest success.

“if your habits do not reflect your dreams or goals, change your habits.”

― Kobe Bryant

These areas can be a challenge. If you are not focused in these areas you will be overrun by the whirlwind of your day. Each day that you live in the whirlwind is another day that keeps you from seeing success in your life and business. Are you in the whirlwind and feeling overwhelmed with life and work? Let me help you think through those challenges and figure out why you are drifting off course. Schedule a complimentary coaching session to see if coaching is right for you.

Leadership is a hard journey. One that should not be done alone. Let me quote Kobe Bryant again and say that “if your habits do not reflect your dreams or goals, change your habits.” I know you have big goals and dreams. Let’s see how you can make them become a reality!
